My Top Ten Studio Mixing Basics
1.Make sure The Monitoring systems are flat ( No EQ & Flat response Speakers )
2.Make sure The Speakers are directed towards your ears ( And not flying past you ears )
3.Clean each individual Tape or audio track ( With Light gates and Compression )
4.EQ Tracks Close to how they would normally sound Naturally ( High EQ =Hiss & Low EQ =Rumble )
5.Kick Drum, Bass Synth or Bass Guitar Should have frequencies that should not clash but blend
6.A good vocal take means not too much processing or equalizing on the mix
7.Keep Reverbs to a minimum. The more you use, the more far away the track becomes
8.Dont Rely on keyboard Instruments to make your stereo mix. Create your own ( Panning )
9.Avoid clashing similar EQs, Keep all Instruments except kick & bass away from the centre
10.Mix Drum & Bass first...Then the music....then cosmetics....Finally the voice & Backing Vocals
Notes: It all depends on the music that I'm mixing, you have to put yourself in that frame of mind
that the song is going to be a hit. Vibes play a big part in the mix, if I cant feel it,
I cant mix it.
Not all recordings are that brilliant, they don't seem to care how they record their music, leaving it all to the mix
and the engineer.
So really, you can only mix what is given to you.....and you cant tell the client how they were supposed to
record their productions, they have a producer to do all that, your there just to mix and create magic.
